Need Assistance

I have an old compaq presario 2178CL Laptop. I am trying to use plop to enable a boot from USB functionality that I dont have with my BIOS. Ive tried using plop on a boot disk and I get the plop bootmanager menu but as soon as I click on any key it freezes up. Is there something I can do to remedy this? Also in an attempt to work around this I installed it to my MBR of Windows XP and now it goes straight to the Boot manager and freezes and I cannot get back to windows. HELP.... SOMEONE... please.
