Installing Windows XP trough USB using Plop. Help!!!

Hi I have a old PC in my house and the CD-rom is damaged so I wanted to install the O/S (because the OS installed in the PC is totally damaged). So I use the WintoFlash program in a different computer to make a 1GB Kingston pendrive booteable and ready to be used like a XP installation disc.

The problem is my computer doesn´t support the USB boot so I research in all the internet and I found the Plop boot manager software that I think is awesome for my purposes.

So I burn a CD with the .iso file in the directory after extract the plop boot manager and I restart my computer and I chose the option that is available in this PC to boot with the CD.

When the boot trough CD is done the menu of PLop appears and I of course select the USB to boot but only appears the same screen like in the normal boot with following:

.....................

I have a USB 1.1 port so I tried to force the load in the MODE 1, MODE2 and the same screen is shown.

I have been waiting until 20 minutes and the usb is not loaded.

OH when I select to boot from the USB the usb is ligthning a little time.

I thougth that maybe the problem was the Windows version installed in the USB but I have been testing with 6 different classes of windows xp and vista and nothing.

Please can someone help me to install windows xp from a usb which motherboard doesn´t support boot from usb using the plot boot manager?

hi,
does the xp install program start on a pc with bios usb support? if yes, then the boot manager does not work on the other pc.

hi perhaps to try different brand of usb memory ? or 2GB or 4GB type?

should try to delesect or flip 'usb legacy support' in bios

you may also try to disable 'quick power on self test' lots of hardware gets uninitialised here

*i think i got working usb 1.1 boot on via chipset kt133 on motherboard asus a7v-e
it should be bit slow for xp,works fine for dos  and some tux , just have updatet plop now and i think should get better

it appears that boot from motherboard's usb 1.1 is not allways working for me
(however i usualy use addon pci usb20 card,which is faster)

apart from modifications to bios options
there may be other factors for non success:
-some conflict that arises from presence of usb 2.0 card
-diferent brands or types of usb memories
-if have 'usb legacy' set to disabled or auto or enabled ?
-if dont have other devices on usb bus or not ?
-if there is some native non functional support in bios
(USB FDD or USB zip on older asus boards ) should it be set to
one of this options or completely ommited (in bios boot configurations)?

-also version of syslinux may have its part
some syslinux 3.61 non working (or slow) and syslinux 3.72 is working.
-about syslinux when manualy added to usb memory
there is also switch called 'safe and stupid mode'

-s   Safe, slow, stupid: uses simpler code that boots better.
        This version may work on some very buggy BIOSes on which SYSLINUX would otherwise fail.

(tests needed to see which one is better)

is it possible to have hosted some previous plop version that
is known good for usb 1.1 ? (like plop 5.01 or 5.03 , not really sure
the best one)   

i've rebooted multiple times, and using (to some extent) diferent sticks, im affraid to have more testing reboots at this point due to old hardvare and possibele failures. (and from usb 2.0 card works like a charm )

IMPORTANT update >
now with plop 507 it just work for me, over usb 1.1 (default no force)
and is reall fast(i mean fast). i have no logic to conclude why previously did not work exept now is USB LEGACY turned to AUTO , i think (and had reboot or two)

ADDIT. update:
it seems that fuul speed of usb 1.1 is unleashed
under these conditions:
-after boot there is POST (*as so called COLD boot)
- there is no Quick POST selected in bios , so there is long memory test
-USB legacy is set to AUTO (i think)

after POST , bios it self diplays in process ,that he has found a device

Usb Datastorage Device found : kingstone usb 2.0 stick

*e.g label of the disk or similar - this is good sign!

if all other boot options in bios are disabled , autom. menu pops up
and there is USB ZIP entry below

*this is also a good sign
just select upper option where you actually put your PloP not this one.

Bios is v1005 for motherboard a7v-e dated from sept 2002.
