Title: plopkexec 0.2 only on i586+ CPU?
Post by: vesalocal on December 17, 2011, 03:12:07 AM
Hi, Elmar

Booting from plopkexec-0.2 unfortunately ended up with the message

"This kernel requires an i586 CPU, but only detected an i486 CPU.
Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU."

Well, thats right :-)

Is this an issue of the 3.1.4 kernel?
Was this kernel compiled to run only on i586+ hardware?

I'd like to take a closer look at the source (it is GPL),
so please publish it   I'm interested in the kernel config!

you downloaded the wrong version, it has been updated after you downloaded it a few days ago. download it again. it seems that you are one of a few persons that got the i586 kernel version

Hi, Elmar

Thanks for your helpful reply:

Oh, that was bad luck...

You are right, now the kernel starts booting.
Until it comes to a reboot...  An endless loop, no messages.

But this is an old board without USB and I think I have to fiddle with the kernel and its drivers.
Can't be too hard to add PCMCIA support and load a little system from a PCMCIA memory card.

However, I'm waiting for the source ;-)

Thanks!

remove the line "append quiet" in the syslinux.cfg/isolinux.cfg
maybe you can see how far the kernel comes before it reboots

how much ram has the pc?

Hi, Elmar

Sorry for the delay...

Quoteremove the line "append quiet" in the syslinux.cfg/isolinux.cfg
maybe you can see how far the kernel comes before it reboots

The kernel shows "Loading plopkexec....ready", a newline with blinking cursor and reboots.

Quotehow much ram has the pc?

Since it is an old VLB board it has 20MB RAM.
One more reason to ask for the sources: the kernel has to be stripped down to only necessary drivers.
In my case there is no need for PCI nor USB.

source code and instructions are now available at http://www.plop.at/en/plopkexec.html

Thank you!  I'll try to  build a small kernel and see what I can do for my old board :-)

Long time no see :-)

In the meantime I built different kernels but without success: wasn't able to boot nor to run plopkexec
and load another kernel/system from pcmcia.
Booting my stripped down kernels already failed.  Must be the low memory available on my 80486 board,
just 32 MB.

Bad luck, I'd say.  So I don't see any chance to boot a linux system from a pcmcia flashcard.

i  dont understand, how far goes the boot process?

Hi, Elmar

Quotei  dont understand, how far goes the boot process?

Now I have a kernel realizing the ISA to PCMCIA adapter :-)
And now it failed at the well known
QuoteFailed to execute /init

That sounds far better now, its possible to fix this problem.

However, it doesn't really help: I wanted to boot Linux from PCMCIA flash memory.
If I first have to load a kernel to exec plopkexec, there is no more need to boot from PCMCIA ;-)

However, the PLoP boot manager saved my soul one more time - it's time to donate something for you
and your work. I'll contact you via PM.

Thanks!
