Title: make a lighter opt.sqfs
Post by: DotCom on July 29, 2009, 05:43:30 AM
Hi Elmar,

As I said in a nother post I am trying to create a lighter version of opt.sqfs with minimal gnome working and the newest version of rdesktop.
this setup will help me to connect via thinclient to win-terminal-servers.
I have tryed to remove files from lib and share directory but it dosent work and the gnome dont open corectly.

can you give me a hint to how to do this corectly  ::) ::)

hi,
what do you think about the following

edit the file /root/gnome
remove the line with
exec gnome-session

add the lines

exec tsclient &
exec fluxbox

this is only for testing. there is much more possible. if you want to remove the fluxbox menu then add before exec fluxbox

mkdir ~/.fluxbox
echo -n > ~/.fluxbox/menu

instead of tsclient you can use rdesktop.

use runme.sh to overwrite the original /root/gnome with yours. its also possible to edit /root/.xinitrc

however, a smaller opt.sqfs would be possibe too, but with the solution above you stay compatible with upcoming opt.sqfs

what do you think?

Hi,
again thx for your replay  :)

I am able to shrink the running os to mininum with things like
gconftool-2 and so on.
what I am trying to do with not much luck  :'(, is to make the opt.sqfs smaller
so it will take less time to load from the cifs share in the network.
now it's size is about 340M and I belive it can be smaller for what I am running.

with regards

if dont use copy2ram, then the opt.sqfs is not copied over the network and the size doesnt matter. it also needs less resources, you have a lot of free ram if you do not copy the opt.sqfs.

if you still want a smaller opt.sqfs, then use fluxbox as window manager. fluxbox does not need gnome and is fast and good. you can remove all gnome and gcc related programs and libs. i think without gnome and gcc you will get a opt.sqfs with maximum 100MB maybe less. to get a really small and clean opt.sqfs its better to compile xorg, fluxbox and rdesktop again. i dont know, maybe i create it.

OK, I understend. ::)

now it looks fine but I am worried that when I will connect more then 100 clients at once the share computer will have problems.

If you will have the time to compile it as you suggested It will help alot.

meny thanks for your quick and allways helpfull replays

Hi,

well it start with " no acceptable C compiler found"
and it allso looks for /usr/local wich is not present at all.

I must say that I am trying to ad this to a running plop with the tmp opt that you shared.

p.s. the fluxbox takes about 25 seconds to startX - is this normal ??

you have to replace the big opt.sqfs with this small one in pluspacks

fluxbox is faster than gnome

maybe I didnt explane myself correctly,

I am working now with fluxbox, I changed the desk top and changed the menu and played a bit with the init file so it will work to my likings  ;D

nevertheless I am trying to get sound on my terminals (connecting with rdesktop) and cannot do that if no sound is avaliable in the plop machine.

still trying to compile it (now in the full opt.sqfs) with ro errors,
I am trying to get over it now.

thanks again...

I am now checking it against more hardware kinds so I will know it will work for everyone.

as I still have to load the sound card manualy, I am working on a script that will determine the sound card and then load the specific files.

it looks grate  :)

Hi
What is included in this small opt.sqfs ?
Is it possible to include gparted ?
Thank's
Title: Re: make a lighter opt.sqfs
Post by: Elmar on August 26, 2009, 20:58:06 PM
include is:
xorg 7.4
fluxbox
rdesktop
and libraries that are needed to run those programs

gparted would be possible, but gparted need libs that are not in this opt.sqfs. so they have to be added too. is the standard opt.sqfs with 340MB too big for you?

and you would like to have gparted too on you small drive?

If it is possible. But using partimage with my mouse is sufficient

Post by: Elmar on August 26, 2009, 21:24:49 PM
why do you need a mouse for partimage? for navigation you need only the keys tabulator, f5 and f6

i take a look how many libs are required for gparted

I use F5 and F6.
thank's for your attention
