Title: about simpler instructions
Post by: dukenukeme on March 16, 2010, 11:49:37 AM
Hello  :)
may i sugest perhaps shoud be added 'Quick start' section
into online documentation

for examlple something that covers 90% of typical usage
(something like folowing instructuons)

Typical modes of usage

First download from here
http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanagerdl.html
archive called plpbt-5.0.8.zip (http://download.plop.at/files/bootmngr/plpbt-5.0.8.zip)
and unpack it with right click--> extract here (to desktop or home directory)

1. quick start from CD
for quick start you need to burn folowing ISO image onto empty CD-R

(http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/1706/01plpbtiso.th.png) (http://img101.imageshack.us/i/01plpbtiso.png/)

by using for.ex infrarecorder (http://infrarecorder.org/?page_id=27) or nero trial lite (http://www.nero.com/eng/downloads-nero9-free.php)

(http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/67/02burningacddvdtoiso.th.png) (http://img716.imageshack.us/i/02burningacddvdtoiso.png/)

or go from menu 'Actions' --> 'Burn image'
-burn to CD-R  (CD-RW may not be readable on old computers)
-burn at low speed (8x)

-now reboot with that CD-R inserted
*enter bios, (usualy  button<DEL>) and put cdrom as first boot device if not allready, and reboot again

2 quick start from floppy
for quick start from floppy you need to put this 1.44 MB flopy IMG
onto physical floppy
(http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/9403/03plpbt144img.th.png) (http://img715.imageshack.us/i/03plpbt144img.png/)

by using program rawrite for windows (http://www.chrysocome.net/rawwrite) ( unpack  rawwritewin-0.7.zip and start it )

(http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/4373/04rawwriteplop.th.png) (http://img411.imageshack.us/i/04rawwriteplop.png/)
- insert empty floppy disk
- drive A: is automaticaly selected
- browse to plpbt.img using button [labeled*1]
- actually write  pressing button 'write' [labeled*2]

- now reboot with floppy inserted
*enter bios, (usualy  button<DEL>) and put floppy as first boot device if not allready, and reboot again

3 add bootmanager to XP
(thinking on subject  how can thiss be  wroten on simple terms... )

it's a bit more complicated for me to explain this procedure
http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanager.html#runwin :(

4 add bootmanager to GRUB/grub4dos

(thinking on subject  how can thiss be  wroten on simple terms... )

hmm, i don't know if someone is ready to use a boot manager, when he does not know how to burn a cd iso or write a disk image to a floppy. without some basic knowledge, its very dangerous to use any boot manager.

best regards

i would like to explain ;)
last year i've first found out about PloP.
and tryed to read documentation , started first by using plpbtin.iso
However that was not what i needed :(

after about 4 months i've dicovered that i needed actualy plpbt.iso
couple of months later ive managed to put it in Grub , boot.ini and rest.

the point is even technicaly skiled person needs some way of 'Quick starting' for. example usb booting
(allmost out-of-the-box) ,and later when satisfied with result
he will put more effort to read documentation more carefully
and customise PloP to His/Hers needs :D
