creating a pdf or ps with the browser or any other gnome program that has a print option is possible without any additional configuration with (surprise) the print dialog. choose "Print" select "Print to File", select pdf and choose a file name.
adding printers works with cups. cups can be easily configured with a web interface. you have to start "cupsd" manually or with rc.local and save/restore the settings of cups that you have to configure it only once.
