Hi,
I just located a firmware UG that will try next.  Also, found a file from Microsoft W/instructions that will do a registry tweak automatically for a CD-ROM lost-in-orbit.

*toggled CD-ROM rear panel strap from DEFAULT,
thanks to elmar's reply.
