PLoP on Sony VAIO VPC CW2S1E, PLoP doesn't boot my USB-HDD

Hallo, I'm a PLoP-newbie and not a Linux freak (not yet ...)

I've got Windows 7/64 installed on my notebook and installed UBUNTU on a external USB-HDD (TrekStore Express, 500G, 2 partitions: 1st 490G, ext3, root; 2nd: 10 GB swap).

I've prepaired my notebook as described on the site (the way using bcdedit). I get the boot-Menu:
"Windows 7"
"PLoP Boot Manager"
I can start the boot manager, it finds my external USB-HDD and the partitions on it.

But when I select the (right) partition, it won't work (x0 ... reboot sometimes, hang most).

What can I do?

btw: I use PLoP, because Sony's VAIOs CW2... have no feature to boot USB-Devices.

Thanks, if anyone can help :)

how do you mean this? you see the partition of the usb drive in the main menu, or you start usb boot?

Hi,

thanks for your reply.

I see the partitions of my USB-HDD in the main menu, can select it:
HDA PARTITION 1   (HDA - 1st three from Windows7, Partition 4 my W7 data-ptn )
HDA PARTITION 2
HDA PARTITION 3
HDA PARTITION 4
HDB PARTITION 1   (HDB - my USB-HDD: there ist UBUNTU root + grub)
HDB PARTITION 2   (there ist UBUNTU swap)

I select HDB Partition 1 (UBUNTU+grub). then a window appears for half a second (MBR OK or ...)
After this I see XO and the VAIO is frozen.

That's all for now :(

this is provided by your bios usb support. use "usb" in the boot manager main menu instead of "hdb partition 1" to use the internal plop usb driver.

Thanks,

but I've tried it already. Now I've tried this again.
USB-Port1: no mass storage device   (or similar, it goes to fast)
USB-Port2: no mass storage device   (...)
...driver ... (cannot read this, it goes to fast)

return to the menu :(

hm...

I got no ideas

is the usb drive connected to the usb port of the laptop or is a hub between drive and laptop?

Elmar

the specs doesn't help. i need the output of the linux program lsusb.
i need "lsusb > lsusb.txt" and "lsusb -t > lsusb2.txt"

there are integrated hubs. the plop boot manager 5.0.x does not support usb hubs. thats the reason why you are not able to boot linux with the integrated usb drivers.

/:  Bus 02.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=ehci_hcd/2p, 480M
    |__ Port 1: Dev 2, If 0, Class=hub, Driver=hub/8p, 480M       <---------------- integrated hub

Thanks Elmar,

what a sh... I was so near to start ubuntu from an external USB HDD :(

Do you know, if PLoP will support this in a nearer future?

all the best for you

Norbert

Thanks a lot,

I've tried to use (at last) to use a expansion card for USB and the disk on it, but there was not enough power (I guess), because the disk didn't start (went always on-off-on-off- ...)

So I have to wait for PLoP 5.1.

All the best for you
